Microsoft Dynamics 365 Import Tool

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Import Tool is a Mixed Reality tool that helps you bring your 3D models into the Mixed Reality application. I was the main UI/UX designer this tool which I designed was later for all applications not only Layout.

Team:

It was an agile process in which I collaborated with multiple disciplines including backend service engineers, front end engineers, user researchers, and project managers.

Process

1) Business value:

I started by understanding the problem we are trying to solve. How will users bring their customized 3D models into our app?

2) Understand the user:

I had to completely understand our users, especially their 3D skills. Were the 3D experts designing a space or are there specific space designers that are novices with 3D.

3) Collaborative brainstorm

By keeping this in mind and understanding our target market, (for example big enterprises don't use cloud CMS because of privacy issues), I started brainstorming with cross-disciplines on some scenarios.

4) Ideation through feedback and collaboration

I would talk consistently with our technical artists, which are experts on 3D models, by understanding their pain-points, I was able to prioritize a feature set for more novice users. I would create wireframes and show it to the 3D artists for feedback.

Due to the small amount of time we had to implement it, I had to iterate fast and remove some of the desired functionalities. I would collaborate with the user research team once a week and tell them what I would need some feedback on. I would seek validation on my designs by the leadership team and engineers would give me their cost estimates for implementation. UR conducted usability tests with my Adobe XD prototype.

I was also involved with the customer engagement part of the product where I conducted contextual inquiry and on-boarded our users. This helped me understand more around their pain-points.

My role

In order to bring the user's  3D models into our app, the user has to use our Import Tool. I was the main UX and UI designer for this. We used a Microsoft cloud back-end service in order to simplify the model.

I was the main designer for the feature. I collaborated daily with the developers, understanding the technical constraints that we have.

I was able to create quick wireframes and prototypes using Adobe XD. I sent it to our research team, who created various usability tests. I gathered that feedback and revised accordingly.

Deliverables

I delivered a deck with the visual designs and process to the developers and content writers. The deck actually helped leadership to tell the story for the import tool to our high-level stakeholders.

Impact

The tool was used by the 4 mixed reality enterprise apps. It unblocked customers to put they personal holograms into our apps.

Challenges

This project had a lot of challenges.

  • We had low capacity on developers, and a strict timing. Many of the features had to be cut.

  • Our product changed business/strategy direction in the process. Our users and their mental models changed, which changed our priorities for the features.
